Biking, walking and wheeling and other forms of ‘open-air’ transport are a great way to get around during the pandemic: You get more space, fresh air, and some gentle exercise to help keep well, while we are dealing with outbreaks. Lots of cities around the world have put in ‘pop-up’ bike lanes and extra space for pedestrians during the pandemic. Here’s a photo of Wellington’s pop-up pandemic cycleway on Brooklyn Hill. Waka Kotahi, our transport agency, provides good guides about how to make extra space for us to walk and cycle more during the pandemic. There is also good information on the Waka Kotahi website about things to think about if you would like to start biking or walking more for transport.
